On my website I discuss breeds of dog that are inappropriate for Urban homes, which includes Maremmas and other Livestock Guardian Dogs, as well as fighting breeds such as Dogo Argentino and the Tosas Inu. I am often criticised by people for having this list which I suggest to avoid unless you have a specific need for this breed.

From time to time I think it is so important to put down what really is just common sense. In this sense I think it is important to give people an insight into the breeding of certain dog breeds. 

It is very hard to enter conversation with people that wish to attack you for pointing out the bleeding obvious...that is Livestock Guardian Dog's are bred to protect Livestock which means they attack strangers, are prone to nervousness when cornered, lack bidability under stress, bark often when they are unsure of noises or sightings, shed large amounts of white hair and are absolutely useless for herding cattle. These are all traits that make them inappropriate for a innercity pet, a chaperon for children at a soccer game, a Stockman, a customs officer or a milk cart operator.

Many people actively choose breeds due to their appearance and forget that behaviour is something that comes with that look of a dog. So whilst it may be tough looking to have a fighting dog, the owner needs to be responsible for that dog and its actions. As does the person who thinks that an LGD is the perfect look for their family, they need to be aware of its, shedding, aggression to the unknown and high propensity to bark.

But hey reality is, there always been someone on the other side of the argument ...I just hope for all those dogs out there that end up being surrendered to shelters due to being purchased by people who didnt know that they would be unsuitable for their home that these people will be there to rehome and rehabilitate these unfortunate dogs.
