- Ensure you dog is vaccinated and wormed- set your dog up for success from the outset by preventing ill health.
- Always provide clean fresh water for your dog 24 hrs a day.
- Ensure you dog has a shaded, secure sleeping place with clean bedding and protection from snakes and other canines.
- Always reward the behaviours you want and ignore the behaviours you don't. A dog is always learning and good habits should be hard to break.
- Microchip your dog ASAP and mark on his collar his name and your phone number and any important information such as 'I am Deaf', 'I am on medication'.
- Socialise, Socialise, Socialise! Make all new experiences for your dog great ones therefore taking away any fear of other dogs, people, places, noises etc.
- Provide the best diet for your dog that you can. Think about the mathmatics of your dogs personal regime how much energy does your dog need each day...is your dog a working dog or a stay at home dog and alter the amounts of fat, protein and carbs. Research whats in your area and yard that may be poisonous to your hound. Speak with your vet about the healthiest weight range and ensure you stay with in it.
- Unless your dog is an incredible example of its breed and you are well set up to become a breeder desex your dog as soon as possible. A female dog can produce over 50 puppies in her life time and a male can sire phenomenal numbers all of which can add to the number of unwanted dogs in society. Desexed dogs can often be much easier to train and generally have less desire to fight and urinate in unwanted places.
